Limes on Wood Cutting Board
Watercolor on paper

My primary mediums are transparent watercolor, ink, and gouache. I like watercolor for the same reasons it can be so infuriating: it is unpredictable and has a life and mind of its own. They either stay where you put them, or wander around on their own. The results are frequently surprising, and the colors are lovely.

Some painters have more control than I do, and they know what will happen as they apply pigment to paper. I feel like I’ll never master this (or any other medium) so I just go with the flow.

I also like using gouache, both for value studies and final works. Like black and white photography, gouache in tones of white, gray and black, can convey surprising insight and feeling, especially in portraits.

Flowers are among my favorite subjects, and nothing beats watercolor for conveying the light and vibrancy of the blooming world.
